Workshop on Metadata for Research Data Sets and Data Repositories in NFDI

When? 14. January 2025, 13:30 – 18:00 Uhr
+ 15. January 2025, 9:00 – 13:00 Uhr
Where? TU Dresden
Who? Metadata representatives of consortia + other stakeholders

We cordially invite metadata experts from all consortia to the TF Metadata workshop. The workshop is the kick-off event to address the goals of the BLV and the mission of the refined NFDI Strategy 25/26 to

  • to create a portfolio of metadata standards and thus lay the foundation for a comprehensive implementation of the FAIR principles in the consortia.
  • to develop criteria for deciding which metadata standards are mandatory or optional to be applied in the NFDI.
  • to ensure a cross-consortia metadata standard improves the accessibility of research data in researchers’ day-to-day work.

The Workshop will further discuss an NFDI-wide recommendation for the registration and continuous updating of research data repositories in re3data and prepare it for submission to the KV with input from the consortia.

Description

The Bund-Länder-Vereinbarung on the establishment and funding of an NFDI addresses the development of transdisciplinary metadata standards for the comprehensive (re-)usability of research data to ‘establish and further develop an overarching research data management system’ and thus ‘increase the efficiency of the entire scientific system’. This objective emphasises that the diverse existing metadata for research data should be standardised across disciplines (cf. Strategy of the NFDI Association 2025/2026 and White Paper: Umgang mit Zielen der BLV als Grundlage für die Strukturevaluation). In this session, the TF Metadata will present the approach to agree on an existing transdisciplinary metadata standard and facilitate the mapping of rich disciplinary standards implemented in the data sources. We will thus present candidates for such a transdisciplinary NFDI recommendation on metadata standards, and moderate the discussion on disciplinary issues. In addition, we would like to agree and document the process on how to map rich disciplinary standards to the candidate(s) using specific examples.

re3data has become established as a registry for making repositories discoverable across various disciplines. However, the needs across the disciplines and consortia are diverse. In the breakout sessions, we will present the current recommendation draft prepared by the TF Metadata and discuss additional disciplinary needs and how to integrate them. In addition, we would then like to discuss how the discovery of NFDI-relevant and recommended repositories in re3data can be improved by using an NFDI profile. This profile should describe the consortia’s approaches for assessing the relevance, e.g., the NFDI4Earth label, and can be linked in an existing field of the re3data metadata schema.

Registration

Registration is possible until 11 December 2024. As the number of seats is limited, it may not be possible to accommodate all requests for attendance. We will confirm attendance by 16 December 2024.
